There’s a spot down on the south side of Castle Rock where the rolling hills meet the big Colorado sky. The wide-open space is dotted with gorgeous evergreens throughout the year, and after the warmer months, the tall green grasses give way to golden straw during the fall. Worn trails disappear into the horizon, waiting to take hikers on adventures into the great outdoors.

The Columbine Open Space is my favorite location, especially for family sessions, because it rarely gets too crowded, and there’s plenty of space to roam since it’s a trailhead. The openness provides such a stunning backdrop no matter the time of year, sunny or overcast – although it does get quite windy since its up on the side of a hill, so dress appropriately in layers! But even the wind adds such a fun dimension to the photos, making them look more life-like and full of energy.

Not only does this location provide unparalleled natural beauty, but it also has a charmingly rustic red barn (no access to the inside) that is perfect for photos. They keep a fresh coat of farm-red paint on it, too, so it always looks well-maintained. This location is so whimsical and perfect any season. Bring a colorful or heirloom quilt and you’ve got some cute summertime photos. Add a couple of holiday-themed props, and you’ve got family pictures for Christmas cards! I love them all!

And if you’re looking for adventure, after your session there are plenty of great trails to explore for a family hike (for something extra adventurous, I heard that this is a great spot for learning snowshoeing since the trails are pretty easy).

One thing to note: although it’s outdoors, they do notallow dogs at this specific location. So, if you’re wanting to incorporate your furry four-legged family members into the family portraits, message me for other options.
