Our Favorite Things to Do in the Colorado Mountains

Colorado is such a beautiful place to live and visit. From the snow peaked mountains to the beautiful trees, to the countless hiking trails, you don’t have to go far to find fun things to do for the whole family. I’m blessed to call Colorado home and to live close to Denver in Highlands Ranch.

The Majesty of the Mountains

While there are some great locations right here in the suburbs, nothing quite compares to being in the mountains. I love when my clients are up for a little hike to take in some beautiful scenery. Here is a list of some of my favorite locations to visit, hike, and photograph in the mountains of Colorado:

  1. Rainbow Lake Hiking Trail in Frisco- this one is a super easy trail so it’s great for kids. The fall foliage is gorgeous and the back trail goes up to “rainbow lake”. Be aware that dogs are allowed off leash here, so you may encounter some big, wet, furry friends- or you may want to bring one of your own!

  2. Lily Pad Lake Hiking Trail- this one is great for all skill levels and features a beautiful lake full of, you guessed it, lily pads. Dogs are also allowed at this location but must be on a leash.

  3. Lake Dillon- the lake freezes over in the winter and offers a great ice fishing spot, but in the summer you can do all your water sports and there are many hiking trails and campgrounds utilized in the fall.

  4. Sapphire Point- the hiking trail here is beautiful, and there is a huge vista overlook. The parking lot is tiny, but who needs a big parking lot when the views are as stunning as they are in this spot? Many people reserve this spot to get married, and it’s absolutely amazing!

  5. Copper Mountain Resort- this is our personal favorite ski mountain. It has a fantastic village and the skiing is great for both beginners and experts. There is something for everyone here, and we can’t wait to ride on their new summer roller coaster!

  6. Willowbrook Trailhead- this hiking trail is full of trees. The forest is beautiful and the many streams are breathtaking. It is just all around a pretty spot.

Whether you’re looking for a fun family outing, a new running spot, or a beautiful location for photos, there are so many great spots in the mountains of Colorado. I love the backdrop the mountains provide for senior photos and engagement sessions, and I appreciate the distraction it provides for families and young children. When it feels more like an adventure than a photo session, kids are more willing to flash me those genuine smiles and giggles and it becomes not only a great new photo for your home but a beloved memory for the whole family. I love the locations mentioned above, but am always up for new adventures with my clients as well. What are some of your favorite spots in the mountains of Colorado?
